Free Big ideas.

The most sought after advertising agency commodity is the “Big Idea”. Those that can stand up to Nike’s “JUST DO IT”, Gieco’s “FOR 15 MINUTES SAVE 15% ON CAR INSURANCE”, or the long list of incredible viral ideas that agencies have developed for companies like Mini Cooper, Skittles and Apple.

Sean Scogin (co-host of the WeWereThinking Podcast) and I were talking last week about some of the big hurdles with big ideas. Not that either of us don’t agree they are the life blood of a successful agency, but that they come with enormous weight. To be honest, I really didn’t think to much about it until I had pitched a really great idea to a client. They agreed it was great, but didn’t want to invest the money it would take to make it reality. I bitched to my wife and she made a statement that changed the way I will think about big ideas for good. “If the idea is so great, quit bitching about the client not buying it and do it for free, put your money where your idea is.” So right she was. This conversion was the beginning of what is now a mental hurdle in the way I think about new business and that critical “Big Idea”,and something I want to explore more. It’s a statement that agencies need to think hard about and take into consideration each and every time they pitch any idea.

Big ideas - great ideas - usually come with a big price tag. Small Clients or start-ups without the huge million dollar budgets are short changed and sometimes ignored when it comes to being contenders for that agency crack “the big idea”. They are typically assigned junior teams with little experience and are turned into an execution style client and not allowed the agencies big guns (or their big ideas). Agencies protect their big ideas like the Mason’s protect their secrets. And my question is why? To me, a big idea is like holding knowledge and power. If it’s shared, it helps things thrive, helps people in the agency and at the client grow. Sharing ideas shows everyone that you are smart, driven and passionate about what you do and not scared to throw it all into the ring.

We are given the challenge of creating great work for our clients, and sometimes we hit on something that’s much bigger than the client asked for. We can’t just sit on that idea, we have to share it. In sharing we can come off as putting our time and energy into that big idea and leaving the “in budget” ideas nothing more than a sour note to our clients ears, as we have already shared the truly great idea with them. It’s a real catch 22. We forget sometimes that the client has a limited budget, limited time line. We expect our clients to step up to the register and pay up for an idea that may or may not work.

So what now? I think agencies should be willing to put their money into a big idea, or maybe the idea is not so great after all. What can a client do if you are willing to risk your agency’s time and money? If they say no, then they truly don’t want the idea and maybe they shouldn’t be your client and maybe the idea should be taken to someone who does. If they say yes then guess what, the person putting up the cash for the idea gets to control it. Yes the client has some rights to protect themselves, but the agency should remain in control of the project from start to finish. You hear that agencies: YOU STAY IN CONTROL. No watering down of your ideas, no client cutting your budget mid stream, no problems with time lines. Agencies invest all they want, and want to get it done on time because their money is at risk. It is a win win for everyone.

How can giving away ideas for free work? This works no different than an investor believing in a product so much he is willing to put all his money into it. So passionate about its success that they are willing to do anything to make it happen. This is how agencies need to be about their clients business. Willing to invest in them and then reap the returns. This is where the idea starts to unravel a bit. Client’s have to be willing to share in the success of an idea, they can’t keep it all for themselves anymore.

If an agency has an idea, and a client to invest, the client then will share in the profits of that ideas success. Clients must be willing to give up a percentage of profits to the agency in order for the agency to work for free. Seems pretty straight forward to me. So who will do it first? Will it be your agency? Are your ideas so big and great you are willing to put your money where your idea is? If not, someone will. Its a business model that will make someone a fortune.

Hootsuite.com

I have been looking for a product, program, website, application or anything else that would help me manage my multiple twitter accounts. After searching around and asking people on twitter what migt be good I focused in on 2 products. Hootsuite.com was the first I saw through google searches.

Let’s dig right in:

Hootsuite.com:

Hootsuite.com features a way to manage multiple twitter accounts in a single easy to manage website. They added a feature today that allows you to send the same post to multiple accounts at once.  Sign up was a little slow for me but once you are signed up its a straight forward site to use.

The best feature of hootsuite.com is the tweetbox. Its located at the top of the interface and makes it really fast to update your tiwtter accounts. You can select 1 or all of you accounts to post a tweet. You can schedule tweets to be send at later times.

I also like the statistics you get when post tweets using the ow.ly URL shortener.

Things I think could be improved:
I wish the list of tweets were inside of an area that scrolled so you never loose track of the menus and that the menus lived in more of a side bar menu and less of a top tab system.

Overall: HootSuite.com is a ton better today thenit was even 3 days ago when i started testing it out. Also seems like it will continue to grow and update. Its easy to use, easy to update and i feel is a great solution for multiple accounts or even just one.

Oh and a nice feature is the HOOLET. It’s a quicklink to a quick tweet page that opens in a small popupwindow from your favorite browser.

Now if only we had matching iphone app.

Bailouts & Bullshit

Out of all the money grubbing, executive over paying, rediculously rich benefiting bailouts there is a group I feel deserves a bailout more then the car industry. It is a group that helps to fill the houses in the USA with music.

The piano dealers in the US are hurting. Hundreds of dealers are closing their doors every month. My dad has work his ass off for 30 years and seen the best and the worst of the industry. But he has been honest, humble and done everything by the book. And his reward for paying his taxes, reporting all his income and standing by his word for his customers is a big nothing from the US government.

We are bailing out Car Manufacturers, WHY? they screwed this stuff up. They are the ones who have failing business models and are making cars that are bad for their consumers and the environment. They pay their executive ridiculous amounts of money and they fly around in their private jets. And they want 40 Billion Dollars to bail them out. Screw them.  The banks that have been bailed out, what are they doing for the communities they are profiting from? What are they doing to better the world?

The piano dealers in the USA like my dad ( www.worldwidepiano.com ) would benefit from a bail out too. But its not coming.I feel very cheated, very angry about the way the government is tossing our tax dollars around. My Dads business may very well close. And his contribution to Dallas has been huge. He has donated pianos to Schools, charities, churches. He has made space for music teachers to have concerts for their hard working students at no charge. He has done so many incredible things for Dallas and now its time Dallas or the US gave back to all like him.

Why bail out the whores of industry who got themselves into the mess they are in.

Time to start taking care of the honest hard working Americans who deserve a break.

Holy Hole Batman!

I live in a house that is celebrating its 100th year standing. (I may throw it a party) So we start watching our chimney over teh last 18 months and have noticed the house being pulled down. Like 8-10 inches. Pulling the flooring and the walls and the windows down with it. Turns our we have 1) poor drainage 2)shifty soil 3)a freaking HUGE chimney (over 35 feet up) and a chimney foundation over 12 feet deep.

Its nuts. I have some pictures below of the massive holes the guys working on it have dug. On features a guy standing on a hole wall with another guy under him 12 feet down the hole.

Turns out they can get to the bottom of it and shore it up. Adding in peirs and metal braces and they will jack it up to fix the house and keep it from falling over. Its incredibly hard work and these guys are really doing a great job. If you ever need work done on your foundation or drainage around your house call Integrated Foundation Solutions. They are great, reasonable in price and their team is so friendly. Their Office Number is 972-660-8600 and their website is www.IntegratedFoundationSolutions.com (needs some help.. maybe they will let me redesign it some day… Tried to get them to trade work for work but you know how that goes).

AT&T DSL Service

Let me start by prefacing this as a rant. A complete and utter disillusioned account of a horrible customer service experience turn worse as hours passed. Just want to post this so that the world can read how incredibly difficult offshore tech support must be.

6PM: Last night 6pm my modem made a weird noise, it lit up all its lights and my surge protector shut off. Everything in my office Shut down. My iPhone was connected and when i reset everything, my iphone was no longer working, my computer could not connect to the internet and my modem was no longer connecting to AT&T.

8PM: iPhone still not working. Hangs up between calls, wont swap between programs, royally screwed up at this point. Schedule appointment at ipod Bar and head to the mall.

8:55PM: Awesome rep at the Apple store replaces my iPhone. Says this is a problem they are aware of and that they can replace it at no charge. Impressive support and I have to say its nice to know they will do that for you. So good job Apple. (Northpark Mall Location, Dallas, TX BTW).

9:30PM: Funny thing iPhones. That whole online activation thing really bites you in the ass when you DON’T HAVE INTERNET! So now the saga really begins. After putting with the connection for about an hour i decide to bite the bullet and call AT&T.

10:30PM: “Hello, dis is AT&T Customer service, “Bob” Speaking how may I be of service” I explain the problem i have and he asks me to reset the computer 3 times, reset the DSL model 3 times and we hard wire the computer to the modem. Guess what after an hour of this he tells me that service in my area is kaput. Great to know after doing all this. I was told it would e restored around 1AM.

Now remember i have an iPhone i need reactivated, and I have a 7am conference call on that phone. So i am really stressing at this point. I decide to take a break.

12:00AM: I return to find the same problem still exists and decide to sleep.

6:00 AM: Up and about and hitting the computer. NO SERVICE STILL! So i crank on a pot of coffee and start my long dramatic series of tech support calls.

6:30AM Finally got a rep on the line. Seems he has a solution (so he thinks). After resetting my computer 4 times, dsl modem 3 times, and then actually getting the modem to connect to the net. He thinks we are done. But guess what i get an IP address, bu pinging does not work. Now my conference call is no longer an issue. Since we missed it. So its now 8AM.

8:00AM: I have been upgraded to LEVEL 2 Support. Time to get transfered to America? Nope no such luck. AT&T India still helping me. OK so i get with another gentleman. We reset the computer 3 times, DLS model 3 times and router 4 times. (Running Total Computer Resets Thus far: 9) We twiddle with settings, we send pings, we change setting, we hard wire we do this and that. and at the end of a 2 hour session between him, then me and 2 more reps. they give up. And congratulations I am no sent back to the ol US of A tech support.

10:10AM: I am not with DSL support Stateside and the gentleman helping me is obviously sick, coughing and hacking in my ear every 2 seconds during the call. He checks for service outages, has me reset the computer 4 times, same of crap different operator. And guess what same results. computer connects to modem which connects to router which gets IP address and is logged in. How strange it is that the internet does not work STILL!!!! More and more crap we try n and on and on. After 5 hour of tech support. AT&T Gives up. They say its not their problem, not an issue with their system. Keep in mind i am hooked directly up to their modem, to 1 computer, no router attached. The guy tells me is a LinkSys issue. Again THE MODEM IS ALL THAT IS CONNECTED! No router attached. So how the hell can it be LinkSys. He says sorry and we part our merry way.

11:00AM: I was so taken back by all the rounds of help from AT&T that I decided to Called LinkSys. My router company. Told them of my issue. Within 1 minute they found the problem with the AT&T Modem, told me how to work around their issues and i was up and Running! The problem was how their router (the main hub in our area) was reconfigured. So i no longer had to use a mode AT&T told me to use. Thank God LinkSys knows how to work around AT&T’s crap.

So points awarded and revoked:
1000 Points awarded to APPLE
1000 Points Awarded to LINKSYS
1000000000000 Point Removed from AT&T

My iPhone is now working. My computer is now connected to the internet. And i am tired and angry!
congrats AT&T Another satisfied customer.

Coytledon : The things kids say

It’s amazing to me the thing we forget from when we were little. We did so many cool experiments, tests, projects that really shaped us. I get these weird flash backs (not the type from drug use mind you) when my kids come home from school and they tell me about things they did. Last couple of weeks my sons been learning about plants and seeds and parts of a plant. Coytledon as i am sure you are all aware is the area in a seed that the food is stored. Since when do kids learn that? Its amazing. And more amazing is watching it unfold. I have been taking pictures of a Lima bean seed gone mad over the last few days. It starts with the seed just coming out of the ground and you can see the rest.

This Plant is about to over grow the pot.
Maybe some of the dirt from the huge holes around our chimney can be used to find a new home for this plant.

How it all began…

I was working on some design project when my client asked me for my home address. I asked why and they said my iPhone was on the way. I was beside myself. I had wanted an iPhone since Jobs announced its future arrival. Swore I would have one, but knew the expense was way out of reach right then. So sure enough about a week later I get my shiny new iPhone.

The phone is all I hoped it to be minus a few features I was sure would come soon, (iChat the biggest one APPLE!). I swapped from a Treo 650 on the Sprint Network to the iPhone on AT&T (again wish it was not AT&T But its an iPHONE!).

So as i played with my new fancy toy, and drove my wife crazy diddling with it constantly, I realized i got some great pictures on it. I wanted to do something fun with it and since it was now apart of my being (since I have it with me always) I started iClimer.com.

All photos on this site are from the iPhone. They have been reformatted for fast loading and are much higher resolution right off the phone. I hope you enjoy my adventures, my incite, my rants and my world.
